A former PCCW general manager was jailed for 20 months yesterday for awarding HK$53 million worth of contracts to companies he owned through his wife and friends.

Hui Chuen-kit, 41, earlier pleaded guilty in the District Court to four counts of fraud and one of conspiracy to defraud.

He claimed he pocketed only HK$400,000 from the illegal dealings.

Judge Kwok Wai-kin said the offences were serious because they involved a breach of trust with Hui's employer.

He rejected Hui's argument that he awarded the contracts to his own companies because he wanted to provide 'quality services' to the telecoms giant in a bid to maximise its profits.

'If that was the true intention, [Hui] would have declared the conflict of interests and asked the company to allow him to do so,' the judge said.

The court heard that Hui, who has a bachelor's degree in science, joined PCCW in 2001. He rose to general manager overseeing the sales department in 2005, earning HK$85,000 a month.
