NINETEEN-year-old Li Ka-wing has the kind of feverish dedication to sports that makes for admirable success. The Kwun Tong Maryknoll College student had a mild temperature, but insisted on attending his school's swim meet to emerge Grade A champion. To give his victory extra shine, he set a new record for the 50 m butterfly besides coming first in the 50 m and 100 m freestyle. But the record was not even the Form Seven student's best time - he could have done better if he were in good form. 'My records come from three years of regular practice and special coaching at a club,' said Ka-wing, captain of the school's swimming team. 'I think one has to do that if one wants to swim well.' Ka-wing had been spending four to five days a week swimming on a two-hour routine at the Kwun Tong Swimming Club. During the summer, he swam seven days a week, dividing his practice into a morning and evening session of two hours each. 'Actually, you need other training to be a good swimmer, for instance, running and doing weights,' said the arts student. 'I like swimming because it has trained me to be perseverant.' This was the second time Ka-wing had won the Grade A championship, but being in Form Seven, he has decided to take a rest from his swim schedule until after the public examinations. 'But I'll keep up my running and weight-training,' he told Young Post .
