Hong Kong will host two major computer fairs this month, with bargains on offer for as little as HK$1.
The incentives will be offered at both the Hong Kong Computer and Communications Festival at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai and at the Computer Mall Festival in Sham Shui Po.
Sony Computer Entertainment will join the Wan Chai event for the first time. Such classic games as King of Fighter and Resident Evil will be sold for HK$1. Also debuting at the Wan Chai festival are digital radios. A thousand of these will be sold at HK$1 to popularise the gadgets.
Three local broadcasters recently granted a digital broadcasting licence - Digital Broadcasting, Metro Broadcast and Phoenix U Radio - will, along with RTHK, launch 18 digital channels by the end of the year. Visitors will get a preview of their future radio programmes at the Wan Chai fair.
'Listeners will be more interactive on our digital radio platform,' said Carol Yu-ying, assistant president of the Phoenix U Radio. Many digital radios include a screen where images and words can be projected with the audio feeds. 'It will expand the market and definitely galvanise the old industry.'
Leung Ding-kau, chairman of the Chamber of Hong Kong Computer Industry, fair organiser of the convention event, expected visitors to exceed 700,000 this year for the event to be held from August 19-22.
