Starting out as a factory for handmade leather bags, this Italian brand (andreacardone.com) has become better known for its unique handmade helmet covered with original fine leather. This Swarovski style forms part of its 2011 collection and comes in black, white and red, studded with a row of glittering crystals. Another style - Marilyn - features graphics of the American screen siren. Sizes range from XS to XL, and each helmet comes with a silk bag and branded nylon gym sac.

Established in 2009, this Hong Kong-based brand (maseihelmets.com) produces striking in-house designed helmets in limited quantities. Strength is ensured by a shell made using polycarbonate injection moulding. The helmets are fitted with internal sunglasses and a removable, moulded breath deflector and chin venting system to reduce fogging. The rear exhaust ports and moulded twin channel supervent prevent heat build-up. Washable Hydra-dry cheek pads are fully removable for hygiene.

This Japanese brand founded by Eitaro Kamata has been producing motorsports helmets since 1958 and became well known after being endorsed by Honda Motor Co in 1965 as 'genuine helmets'. This open-faced model is made from complex layers of strong glass fibre and 3-D pre-shaped organic fibres. Its shell is rigid yet light.
