FEMALE nurses in trousers could become a regular feature in Hong Kong hospitals as a design team puts its creations on show.
The uniforms will be featured in a fashion parade tomorrow, and if nurses like what they see the designs may soon appear in selected hospitals for a trial period.
Although the uniforms are still simple and practical, they are a far cry from the existing traditional white dresses with just a hint of blue and red.
The design team led by Frankie Ng Man-ching, a design consultant and lecturer at Hong Kong Polytechnic's Institute of Textiles and Clothing, took a year to come up with uniforms for male and female nursing staff in nine ranks, five streams and for two seasons.
Mr Ng said: 'We spent a long time conducting detailed surveys of nursing staff to find out exactly what they wanted and I believe we have come up with uniforms which will be acceptable to the vast majority of nurses.' It is not the first time female nurses have had the choice of wearing trousers in a public hospital in Hong Kong.
Earlier this year, fashion guru Eddie Lau Pai-kei came up with new uniforms, including trousers, for female nurses at Yan Chai Hospital.
