Wine critic and author James Halliday is in town this week to promote the latest edition of his book Australian Wine Companion, and he's been keeping very busy. On Wednesday afternoon, the award-winning oenophile hosted a lavish luncheon at the China Club for a large media contingent, where he introduced the 2012 edition of his book and a series of Australian wines. He then trekked across the harbour to host an evening tasting session at Hotel ICON in Tsim Sha Tsui. Tonight, he'll be the guest of honour at a gala dinner at the JW Marriott. This tour is playing out like an all-out guide for Australian wine, as Halliday is accompanied by a group of winemakers: Wolfgang Blass, Chris Tyrrell, Gary Farr, David Hohnen, Con Moshos, Dave O'Leary, and Nick Walker. The 2012 edition of the book is not available yet in Hong Kong bookstores (the 2011 edition is on sale) but Halliday has a solution for that - an iPhone appplication. The app contains only a portion of the book's material, but with more than 6,000 notes on Australian wine pairings, it should be enough to tide wine lovers over.
