'This year's results are the best to date for the ESF,' said chief executive officer Heather Du Quesnay.

Some 8,322 students took the GCSE in five ESF schools in the city, and provisional data suggests that 55 per cent received A* and A grades. That compares to 23.2 per cent in the UK.

Among the 41 students who achieved eight or more A*s, 10 of them received 10 A*s.

Amelia Chao, who studies at South Island School, achieved the stunning result of 10A*s and 2As. She put it down to consistency, saying: 'I had been constantly revising since Year 10.'
