So many soldiers

I REFER to the news report headlined, 'Fear rules Srinagar at night' (South China Morning Post, November 18).

According to that report there are 150,000 Indian troops in Kashmir. In fact, there are about 600,000 armed Indian troops in the valley.

This is the highest ratio of armed men to a civilian population in the world. The figure is even higher if you include the number of troops stationed in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and Chinese-held Kashmir.

The people of Kashmir are the only people in the world whose land is divided among three powers. In none of these three areas do they have any self rule.

The British Government has to share some moral responsibility towards Kashmir.
