GOALKEEPER Peter Guthrie was the toast of Rangers when he helped his club emerge victorious in a penalty shootout after a goalless extra-time draw in the quarter-finals of the Senior Challenge Shield competition at Mongkok Stadium last night.
Guthrie pulled off a brilliant save when he stopped Paul Masefield's spot-kick and he then saw Wai Kwan-lung's effort strike an upright in Sing Tao's fourth and last kick.
Ironically, Guthrie was the hero for Sing Tao when he helped the side win this knock-out tournament four years ago.
Rangers midfielder Cheung Kam-wa made no mistake with his penalty, blasting home to give his club a 4-2 shootout victory which earned the one-time Hong Kong giants a semi-final clash with champions Eastern.
Midfielder Tam Siu-wai, Steve O'Shaughnessy and Darren Fellows had all been successful with their spot kicks.
Guthrie was hardly tested by the Sing Tao attack during play as the Tigers solely missed former Sunderland striker John Moore, who was sitting out a one-match suspension.
Rangers deserved the win as they created more chances with Kevin Meacock almost stealing victory when his curling shot smacked against an upright in the 68th minute.
