Young Hongkongers are willing to work on the mainland for short-term stints to gain experience but still find jobs in Hong Kong more appealing, according to a survey.
Hong Kong Human Resources Exchange Centre's study showed that 67 per cent of 500 students polled had worked on the mainland or would like to. Among them, 86 per cent said they would work there for at most three years.
'People worry that we are sending away our talents, but now we see that many of them are actually planning to come back,' said Perry Suen Pang, the centre's executive director. 'They're just using the [mainland job] as a stepping stone.'
Wong Tak-ching, who interned for Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in Hangzhou , said he enjoyed the more laid-back pace on the mainland.
'We had a two-hour lunch and nap period. Senior managers would play table tennis with staff during the break,' he said. 'But if I had two job offers, one in Hong Kong and one in the mainland, I would prefer the one in Hong Kong.'
The survey of senior secondary school and college students was conducted over the past two months.
