Working women in Guangzhou are expected to spend an average of 8,000 yuan (HK$9,800) in Hong Kong during the National Day 'golden week' holiday next month, according to a survey commissioned by a major mall developer.
Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) said that of 604 mostly office workers surveyed in Guangzhou this month, all were planning to come to Hong Kong during the long holiday.
Forty-three per cent said they would spend 4,000 yuan or less during the holiday, while 39 per cent said they would spend between 4,000 yuan and 8,000 yuan. About 6 per cent said they were planning to spend more than 16,000 yuan.
'The interviewee with the highest budget is planning to spend 100,000 yuan on watches during her trip. Another says she will spend about 80,000 yuan on handbags, watches, jewellery and skin care products,' said Liu Yu, deputy chairwoman of Shenzhen Woman Magazine, which conducted the poll for SHKP.
She said nearly half of those surveyed said their main reason for going to Hong Kong was to shop. About 23 per cent would go mainly for sightseeing and the rest would visit friends and sample food.
Emmy Leung Yuen-shan, senior promotions manager at SHKP's leasing department, said the property developer had arranged for 40 tour groups from the mainland to visit three of its malls next month, hoping to bring in 1,675 visitors and HK$8.87 million in sales.
It plans to spend HK$3.5 million to promote its eight malls for the golden week holiday after National Day on October 1.
