Although Simple Plan's last, self-titled album was a detour from defining their sound, new release Get Your Heart On reminds listeners of the band's roots, taking them back to the No Pads, No Helmets era. Although the band clings to the pop/punk style, there is noticeable pop production, making the tunes even catchier.
Perhaps what makes this album stand out from previous offerings is the impressive array of guest singers. Jet Lag, lead vocalist Pierre Bouvier's duet with Natasha Bedingfield, is easily the album's highlight. The relaxing acoustic Summer Paradise features Wavin' Flag singer K'naan and offers that feel-good, Jason Mraz/Bruno Mars vibe.
Alexander Gaskarth, lead singer of All Time Low, features on Freaking Me Out, providing the album with a dance-rock element. Rivers Cuomo from Weezer contributes to Can't Keep My Hands Off You, for more old-school Simple Plan.
Astronaut and Gone Too Soon see Simple Plan venturing off in the ballad direction, but the band doesn't quite have what it takes to pull them off, leaving both songs, at best, lukewarm.
While This Song Saved My Life uses fan messages to form its lyrics and features vocals from the band's fans, the lyrics of other songs are not very creative, and often poor. But if you're willing to forgive those shortcomings, Simple Plan fans won't be disappointed and new listeners will be in for a treat.
