I REFER to Mr Chan Sui-wai's letter headlined, 'Riding for fall' (South China Morning Post, November 10) concerning, among other things, road obstructions and dirty pavements caused by food stalls operating near Yuen Long Plaza.
The location under complaint is the Kik Yeung Road Cooked Food Market near Yuen Long Plaza. Staff of the Regional Services Department are well aware of the problem and regular enforcement action has been taken against the offending stalls to clamp down on the malpractice.
Over the past two months, 18 market stall operators have been arrested and charged with illegal hawking and road obstruction offences. All the related paraphernalia on the pavement were seized.
A night raid was mounted on November 12, jointly with the police, resulting in the arrest of two stall operators and the seizure of paraphernalia including 12 tables and 115 stools.
Regarding the cleanliness of the pavement outside the cooked food market, a cleansing service as frequent as four times a day is being provided by our cleansing contractor in an effort to keep the area clean.
The location is being kept under close observation and appropriate action will be taken when necessary.
