School leads the way in recycling
If your school is looking for a green project, consider collecting plastic waste and turning it into usable materials. You can do this with the help of Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre (YOT PRRC).
The centre was opened in 2010. It is supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund. It provides a facility for turning local plastic waste into recyclable materials.
Last year, YOT Wong Suk Fong Memorial Secondary School took part in such an initiative under the YOT Plastic Resources Acquisition Partnership Scheme. The whole school - from Form One to Form Seven - was involved in collecting and gathering plastic materials.
'Every student took part in it,' says Tang Wing-chi, who teaches economics and liberal studies at the school. 'Some students collected plastic bottles and bags in the school. Others collected them from home. Some went out to the street to look for bottles.'
Some students also visited YOT PRRC to learn about the whole process of how plastic waste is treated from sorting and shredding to cleaning and pelletising.
Tang believes the activity was a good lesson outside the classroom.
