Markers on the Dr Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail pepper Sheung Wan and Central - locations where the revolutionary leader spent his formative years and where history was made.

The markers tell of the important role Hong Kong played in the years running up to the revolution. Here, revolutionaries held secret meetings, secret agents from the Qing dynasty were active, funding for the revolution was transferred and revolutionary leaders were assassinated.

However, there is a dismal disparity between the archive pictures on the trail markers and the few traces of the events of that time that remain at most of the sites marked.

The trail was set up with 13 markers in 1996. In 2001, two more points were added. The first addition was at the University of Hong Kong - now the starting point. The second was the seventh point, on Gage Street - where revolutionary Yeung Kui-wan was assassinated. Red enamel signs were also put in place in 2001.

A woman who visited the trail with her husband for the Chung Yeung festival said she had been left disappointed. 'Without the markers, you wouldn't even know that the location had such historical significance, because all the old buildings are gone,' she said.

One of the most famous locations is where Yeung Kui-wan was assassinated by Qing authorities. The trail marker for this point is beside a saccharinely pink store selling fancy dress.

The trail's starting point - the university's Loke Yew Hall - is the only building still used for the purpose it was in Sun's day. It is easy to imagine him pacing the lotus pond, dreaming of overthrowing the Qing and for modern China to emerge.
