Why you can trust SCMP

Pacific Gourmet on the 12th floor of Horizon Plaza imports and supplies Hong Kong with premium-grade produce at affordable prices. The company provides jet-fresh seafood and meat, hand-made sausages and a range of high-end deli items and groceries from around the world.

The seafood comes from the pristine oceans off Australia and Norway and not only tastes wonderful, but is good for you. It's calorie-light and full of nutrients not easily found in other food. Every Friday, a fresh shipment of chilled seafood arrives in the shop.

The company takes pride in sourcing food that tastes the way it should, without unnecessary or unhealthy additives. As a result, it sources food wherever possible that is either organic or produced in a sustainable environment. The trained butchers and fishmongers on staff are happy to offer recipe ideas and advice on cooking techniques.

Pacific Gourmet also runs a workshop where prospective oyster connoisseurs can acquire the skills to properly choose, shuck, serve and enjoy fresh oysters. The hands-on course will show you how to find the right spot and apply rhythmic rocking motions to shuck oysters cleanly and easily. White wines that complement seafood are also pointed out. As part of the lesson, you'll receive a dozen fresh Australian oysters and your very own shucking knife.

As the name suggests, the long-established Viva Italia just downstairs on the 11th floor imports all its gourmet produce from various regions of Italy. This includes wine, olive oil, pasta and sauces, truffle paste, vinegar, pickles, honey, cheese and salami, all at far better prices than you'll find in the major international supermarkets in town. One of the store's best-selling items is Parma ham.

The company has also brought in Italian gelato producing equipment to make the frozen dessert for the local market. All the gelato bases are imported from Italy, and are combined with fresh fruits.
