What better way to learn about renewable energy, organic farming and recycling of food waste than going on an eco-tour in your community? Yan Oi Tong (YOT), a non-profit group, has collaborated with Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School to develop a sustainable environmental protection education guided tour project. The two-year project was funded by the government's Environment and Conservation Fund, and officially launched this month. Tang Wai-keung is the school's project co-ordinator.

'The tour will take the public to four locations in Tuen Mun, including YOT's community and sports centre and its plastic resources recycling centre, the government's EcoPark and the school's garden and science centre,' says Tang. 'At each destination, people will learn about things like different types of renewable energy, recycling methods for plastic bottles and food waste, and organic farming and cooking.'

Tang says 100 Form Three and Form Four students will be recruited from the school as tour guides. The students will attend workshops and work with 200 parents and other members of the community to introduce the facilities to others.

'We hope the tour will help to promote energy conservation and the habit of recycling to students and the public. By linking up the four locations in one tour in the same district, it should offer some great teaching resources and venues for teachers as well,' he says.
