A DRIVER blackmailed a soft drink company for $1.5 million by threatening to contaminate four cartons, the District Court heard.
But Lee Yee, 36, promised the Vitasoy Company he would repay the money with interest within six months, Judge McMahon was told yesterday.
Johnson Lam, prosecuting, said Lee first rang the firm on November 19 last year but the managing director, Law Yau-fai, was not available.
Three days later he called again and left a message saying if Mr Law did not want any harm to come to his home and family, he should lend him $1.5 million.
Lee threatened to contaminate four cartons of drink and circulate them on the market, unless the cash was delivered to the Post Office in Central that day.
But the police were called and the money was not delivered. The following day Lee rang again, and new arrangements were made for the money to be delivered in Central on November 25.
Police laid an ambush and Lee was arrested after he took a paper bag containing counterfeit money.
