For anyone who has been to a Chinese wedding in Hong Kong, it's easy to predict a number of traditional elements. 
From the banquet hall decked out in fire-engine red and the 'double-happiness' character to the 10-12 course meal of suckling pig, steamed fish, roasted chicken and other food must-haves, each element harks back to symbols of wealth, prosperity and abundance. 
Here is a look at some interesting and amusing traditions from other cultures. 
At a Hindu Indian wedding, be prepared to celebrate and rejoice for hours, days and sometimes weeks with the bride and groom. 
These weddings are all about rituals and traditions (and lots of them), with some unique customs based on the couple's caste and community. 
From the Gujarati community in western India, one wedding ritual involves a pot of water, milk and vermillion mixed together, with a ring and some coins thrown in. Then the couple are allowed seven attempts to fish out the ring. 
Whoever retrieves the ring first is considered as the dominant personality in the relationship. 
And in a show of fun and games, when the groom brings his new bride home, his sisters block the entrance and demand money before letting him in.
Throughout Japan, the sake ceremony has been performed for centuries. Instead of vows, the groom, then the bride, take three sips from three different sake cups. 
Next, the sake is offered to the groom's father and mother, then the bride's father and mother. 
Similar to the Chinese tea ceremony, this custom symbolises the new bond between the families and respect for the parents.
In Korea, the groom used to give the mother of the bride a live wild goose. But times have changed and nowadays the bride's mother usually gets a carved wooden goose. As wild geese mate for life, this gesture symbolises that the groom will care for his bride for life. 
Another ritual happens a few days after the wedding ceremony. 
The bride offers the groom's parents dates and chestnuts - to represent children. In return, the parents present sake to the bride and, to finish the ritual, they throw the dates and chestnuts back to the bride, who tries to catch them in her skirt. 
Usually on the Korean wedding menu is one dish: noodle soup. The name for wedding banquet in Korean is kook soo sang, which translates into 'noodle banquet'. 
To ensure good luck, British brides would sew lucky charms such as a silver horseshoe onto the hem of their dresses. If it rains on the morning of the wedding day, it's a good omen. 
One of the world's biggest wedding traditions started from  Britain's King Edward VI in the 16th century, who declared that the third finger  of the left hand was the place to wear wedding rings. 
The first  were made of iron, but gradually transformed into gold, which showed off a family's wealth.
