Jardine Aviation workers mull industrial action
Jardine Aviation Services unionists will meet with their management today before deciding whether to take any industrial action. Members of the 300-strong union voted on Tuesday in favour of industrial action over pay and conditions. They are demanding at least one day off every week, a 20 per cent increase in basic pay and a 50 per cent increase in overtime payments. Industrial action could affect the check-in and baggage services of up to 31 airlines. The union said many staff who worked long hours, were given only two days off each month. The company has about 900 employees.
Gallagher tipped as Ireland votes for president
Sean Gallagher, a stocky, shaven-headed technology entrepreneur and TV personality, is the front-runner in Ireland's presidential election vote today. At 49, he is the youngest of the seven candidates (pictured, at a radio interview) vying to become the Irish Republic's ninth president - a largely ceremonial role. A final poll put Gallagher at 40 per cent, with former arts minister Michael Higgins of Labour, the junior governing coalition party, at 25 per cent, and Martin McGuinness, the former Irish Republican Army paramilitary commander, at 15 per cent. Independent senator David Norris, the first openly gay presidential candidate, was at eight per cent, and Gabriel Mitchell, a European Parliament lawmaker for Ireland's Fine Gael senior governing coalition party, at six per cent. Independents Mary Davis and 1970 Eurovision Song Contest winner Dana Scallon were both at 3 per cent.
