Batman: Year One

Comic book fans eagerly awaiting the release of the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, can sate their appetite with the new animated film Batman: Year One.

The movie chronicles Batman's trials in his first year as the caped crusader and his relationship with Jim Gordon, then only a lieutenant with the Gotham Police Department. As Batman defines his role as protector of Gotham City, Gordon must battle police corruption that goes all way up to the commissioner.

The movie features the voices of Benjamin McKenzie as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Eliza Dushku as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Bryan Cranston as Gordon and Katee Sackhoff as Detective Sarah Essen.

Long-time DC Universe producer Bruce Timm has a small part as 'Thug #1'.

The DVD and Blu-ray release includes a short animated film titled Catwoman in which she battles the crime boss Rough Cut. There is also a sneak peek at the upcoming film Justice League: Doom, two featurettes, a commentary, a digital comic book and two Batman: The Animated Series episodes.

This is an excellent interpretation of the 1987 comic books written by Frank Miller and illustrated by David Mazzucchelli.
