Top suits celebrate Wing Tai boss' award for boosting renowned UK tailor
Congratulations to Dr Christopher Cheng Wai-chee. The property and trading entrepreneur took home this year's Walpole Medal of Excellence.
The prestigious award was conceived in 1992 to promote British luxury brands and craftsmanship at home and overseas. A slew of local business bigwigs have been honoured with the award over the years, including Li Ka-shing, Walter Kwok Ping-sheung, Dickson Poon, Peter Woo Kwong-ching and Joyce Ma.
Guy Salter, the deputy chairman of Walpole, said Cheng's expansion of British tailor Gieves & Hawkes had helped raise the profile of British luxury and given the tradition of fine bespoke tailoring a wider audience.
Founded in 1771 in London, Gieves & Hawkes was acquired by Wing Tai Properties, of which Cheng is chairman, in 2002.
The award ceremony, which took place at the British consulate, attracted a full house of celebrity guests to raise a glass to Cheng.
