The district council elections proved a successful launch pad for the smaller political groups.

The NeoDemocrats - set up by disillusioned former Democratic Party members who opposed the government's electoral reform package on 2012 elections - won eight seats after fielding 10 candidates in New Territories East constituencies on Sunday.

The 80 per cent success rate is among the highest of any political party, but Gary Fan Kwok-wai - a founding member who won a seat in Wan Hang, Sai Kung district - said he was still not satisfied as two members failed.

However, with the party gaining more than 25,000 votes across the constituencies, this had boosted its ability to recruit more members and prepare for the Legislative Council election next year, Fan said.

The New People's Party - seeking the vote for the first time - had 12 candidates and secured four seats. The party's vice-chairman, Michael Tien Puk-sun, defeated democrat incumbent Louis Wong Yui-tak in Discovery Park, Tsuen Wan district.

Tien said the result was satisfactory considering the party was less than a year old and started with only one district councillor. He added that the results could serve as 'a foundation to field reasonable candidates' in next year's Legco election.
