Guangdong committee to vet tax experts

Adela Ma

GUANGDONG hopes by the end of the month to establish a committee to vet accountants' qualifications in line with a national taxation overhaul.

Director of the Provincial National Taxation Bureau, Chen Liuming, yesterday said this was part of the effort to modernise China's complex tax system and bring it into line with international standards.

Mr Chen was in Hong Kong to attend a certificate award ceremony for a distance learning course on Chinese taxation at the University of Hong Kong.

The committee will certify accountants, lawyers and auditors as taxation professionals and it will be the authorised intermediary between the government and enterprises, both state-run and private, in taxation matters.

He said it was a state directive for every province to set up its own committee and standardise the qualifications.

'Because of the complexities of the tax system, people in businesses sometimes do not know what's going on. We hope that this mechanism of intermediary will make things easier,' Mr Chen said.

'It's just like in Hong Kong - people have to go to accountants or auditors to get things done.'
