Surcharge for disposal of e-waste on the table
The Advisory Council on the Environment meets to discuss a proposed surcharge on electrical products for disposal of e-waste. The surcharge is to finance a HK$400 million plant in Tuen Mun, which will process televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and computer products. Officials expect that prices of some e-products will rise. The charging scheme will require an amendment to the law, to be submitted to legislators next year.
Samsung results likely to show strong performance
Samsung Electronics releases third-quarter results. The Korean consumer electronics giant recently overtook Apple as the world's top maker of smartphones, with a 44 per cent jump in shipments, and forecast strong sales in the current quarter. Samsung is emerging as a major threat to Apple, but is also one of its major trading partners, making hi-tech components for Apple products.
