Surcharge for disposal of e-waste on the table
The Advisory Council on the Environment meets to discuss a proposed surcharge on electrical products for disposal of e-waste. The surcharge is to finance a HK$400 million plant in Tuen Mun, which will process televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and computer products. Officials expect that prices of some e-products will rise. The charging scheme will require an amendment to the law, to be submitted to legislators next year.
Samsung results likely to show strong performance
Samsung Electronics releases third-quarter results. The Korean consumer electronics giant recently overtook Apple as the world's top maker of smartphones, with a 44 per cent jump in shipments, and forecast strong sales in the current quarter. Samsung is emerging as a major threat to Apple, but is also one of its major trading partners, making hi-tech components for Apple products.
First astronauts take off after string of disasters
Russia launches three astronauts for the International Space Station (ISS) on a key mission Moscow hopes will restore faith in its space programme after a string of failures. Two Russians and an American will blast off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on a Soyuz rocket blessed on Saturday by an orthodox priest (right), the first manned launch since the retirement of the US shuttle made Russia the sole nation capable of taking humans to the ISS. It is also the first launch since an unmanned Progress supply vessel bound for the ISS crashed shortly after blasting off in August, which prompted a rejig of the timetable for launches to the ISS and the temporary grounding of Soyuz rockets. Russia is hoping a smooth mission will lift a dark mood days after the November 9 launch of its Phobos-Grunt craft to Mars ended in another failure.
Hope for political detainees in new Myanmar amnesty
Myanmar is expected to declare a new prisoner amnesty that will include political detainees, according to government officials in the military-dominated country. The move comes a month after a mass amnesty by the government disappointed observers and the opposition by failing to release most key dissidents. It also comes just a few days before the country's new nominally civilian administration is due to attend a summit of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) on the Indonesian island of Bali. The meeting will mark an important foray on the global stage by the government eight months after it replaced a military junta. Myanmar, which has shown signs of tentative reform in recent months and appears keen to break out of its international isolation, is expected to use the gathering to seek support for its bid to take the Asean chair in 2014. Hopes of change in the country have increased recently. The release of all of the country's political prisoners, who include pro-democracy campaigners, journalists and lawyers, however, remains a top demand of Western nations that imposed sanctions on Myanmar. 
Beijing subway prepares for the winter rush
The Beijing subway starts preparing for 'winter transport' from tomorrow. The operator said passenger numbers usually rose in winter because of the cold weather and the cabins were more crowded because of thick winter outfits. Staff will be assigned to direct passenger flow during peaks.
