Executive Certificate in Accounting for Business Managers HKU SPACE

Accounting is an integral part of managing a business, and something which all managers should master. For those without an accounting educational background, HKU SPACE offers the executive certificate in accounting for business managers.

'Students will be equipped with knowledge in understanding financial statements, making sound financial decisions such as break-even decisions, and budgeting and implementing sound internal control procedures,' says Dr Olivia Lui Lai-wah, programme director.

The course is structured as an in-house training and is tailor-made to serve the differing accounting needs of various companies. Since it is a course for executives, the focus is on analysing financial statements. Fundamentals such as bookkeeping and auditing will only be discussed briefly. Lui advises students to gain some basic knowledge in accounting before applying for the programme.

Class sizes are capped at 20 students, coming from a wide range of businesses. Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree from a recognised university, an associate degree or a higher diploma, and have three years' relevant supervisory work experience.

The course involves 45 contact hours, and students must complete in five months all three modules - interpretation of financial statements, management accounting, auditing and financial management. Lessons take place on Saturday afternoons or evenings at the SPACE learning centres on Hong Kong Island.
