A nightclub hostess who killed her newborn baby when she put it into a toilet bowl to stop its crying and smothered it with a bed sheet was placed on probation for two years yesterday. Chong Ching-yuet, 27, who pleaded guilty to infanticide in the Court of First Instance, must also receive psychological and psychiatric treatment as deemed necessary by a probation officer. Infanticide is classed as a special type of homicide in Hong Kong, with most sentences resulting in probation and counselling instead of jail. That results from a British precedent, where judgments tacitly accept that most young mothers who commit the crime are acting out of desperation. Mrs Justice Verina Bokhary also took into account that Chong had been in custody for more than a year. The court heard that the severe mental and physical exhaustion caused by giving birth had impaired Chong's reasoning. Barrister William Stirling, referring to psychiatric reports, said yesterday that his client did not have any long-term psychiatric disorder. Chong must not take dangerous drugs, given her history of sniffing ketamine. She must undergo drug-withdrawal treatment. The judge warned Chong not to breach the conditions of her probation or she would be resentenced. Chong has a criminal record, including theft and drug possession. The court earlier heard that in September last year, Chong, a single mother who had had three abortions, gave birth to a healthy baby girl at a Mong Kok guest house. Chong had not been expecting the baby for another month, and had checked into the guest house because her flatmate was on the mainland and she was locked out. After giving birth, Chong put the baby in the toilet bowl, stuffed a soiled bed sheet into it and closed the lid, so no one would hear the girl crying. A guest house worker found the baby, which a doctor said could have died from drowning or breathing difficulties from being placed upside down after birth. Chong told police when arrested that night: 'I was scared. I gave birth to the baby. It kept crying so I threw it into the toilet bowl.'
