Sex education is necessary

I REFER to the letter 'Tainting the minds of children' (South China Morning Post , November 18) by Brian Leung about sex education for children.

I disagree with his opinion about programmes which talk about sex. Sex is not dirty. We cannot close children's minds and prevent them from learning about it.

The mass media has indeed changed a great deal in its approach to sex education. But this is not a bad thing. Their aim is to give the youngsters proper knowledge about sex.

If the mass media doesn't do this, youngsters' curiosity will make them learn about sex (probably wrong and bad aspects) by means they find themselves.

Don't you think a better way is to teach them? I think the best method to teach children about sex is via the mass media. Readers, audiences, even the Government, have the right to correct any misconception about sex education if it is done by the mass media.

On the other hand, parents should play a part in educating their children about sex.
