Ocean Park welcomed three spotted seals and five Chinese giant salamanders on Monday. Both species are in the second category of the State Key Protected Wildlife List.
The animals are gifts from the National Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Association and the mainland's Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park.
The spotted seals, also known as largha seals, will move into the new Polar Adventure area, due to open next summer. Ocean Park chairman, Allan Zeman, says the new attraction can convey conservation messages about how global warming is threatening creatures living in the polar regions.
Chen Yi-de, deputy director general of the mainland's Bureau of Fisheries, adds: 'Due to various anthropogenic factors, coastal and inland river habitats have experienced drastic changes in recent years, putting rare species under serious threat.'
Visitors will get to feed the new seals at the North Pole Encounter, and meet walruses and snowy owls.
At the South Pole Spectacular, visitors can see penguins swimming in a huge tank. The indoor temperature and sound effects will mimic the real conditions in the South Pole to give guests the ultimate experience.
