THE Operation Santa Claus charity fund total has surged past the magic $1 million mark only five days after its launch. The amount collected so far stands at $1,147,840. Yesterday, the Operation Santa Claus mailbag contained 12 cheques which tallied to $14,500, while last night's Battle of the Taipans quiz raised $300,000. This year's month-long drive, run by the South China Morning Post in partnership with RTHK, will help fund projects for the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children. Volunteers raised $30,340 at the weekend's Wan Chai Festival. Tonight, the Fringe Club Folk Society will hold a Christmas concert to raise further funds. People donating $500 or more - received before Friday - get the opportunity to win two United Airlines return flights to Singapore. The draw will be made on Radio 3's Hong Kong Today programme on Friday. Put an address or telephone number on the back of your cheque.
