Variety fills out education
THE desire to explore a wide range of knowledge and develop a variety of interests were essential elements for an all-round development, said Professor Leung Ping-chung.
The head of New Asia College, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was speaking at the 20th speech day of YWCA Hioe Tjo Yoeng College. The professor told students that they should make the best use of their time and expose themselves to a variety of study fields and thus widen their horizon.
'The path of life may not be smooth and easy, but we can prepare ourselves to face any challenges by equipping ourselves with different kinds of knowledge,' Professor Leung said.
He stressed the importance of self-study and wide exposure in order to understand world trends.
Do not focus on academic learning alone, he advised.
For example, music and literature could help us to enrich our lives, he said. 'When you feel upset or depressed, artistic and cultural diversions can have an amazingly healing effect.' He also cautioned students against blindly following trends.
Form Seven graduate Fong Kin-cheung echoed the professor's advice. He said it was good for students to develop a wide range of interests, which would help them discover their potential and abilities.
