If you're still waiting to buy a tablet, the Ainol Novo 7 Basic is beyond tempting. It's the latest Android tablet to hit stores, and the first tablet priced at less than HK$1,000.
For that money, you have to accept some compromises: the screen is only 7 inches, and offers just 800 x 400-pixel image resolution. The processor is only 1GHz and comes from an unknown chipmaker - Ingenic XBurst - and has a mere 8GB of storage, though you can expand it up to 32GB with an SD card.
The built-in cameras are also very limited: 2 megapixels on the back - lower quality than most mobile phones - and an ancient 0.3-megapixel for the front.
Lastly, there is no 3G support for connecting to mobile networks, pretty much standard, it seems, for all technology these days.
Despite these faults, the Novo 7 Basic runs one of the latest operating systems - Android 3.2 - and can cope with most tablet applications, including Adobe Flash 11 for online video streaming, 3D gaming, 1080p HD video playback, and Wi-fi connectivity.
One bonus feature is the HDMI TV output port, which lets you connect the Novo 7 Basic to your TV or computer to share content. It's not that sleek, and not that thin, but at HK$999, the Novo 7 Basic makes a nice gift for someone new to the tablet universe.
