When someone gets given money or favours for something for which they are not meant to be paid, it is corruption. It is considered a major cause of evil around the world.
Corruption affects people at all levels of society. It abuses the poor and keeps them poor, sends children to bed without food and drags on a country's economy.
Corruption continues to plague many countries, according to Transparency International's 2011 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released on December 1 last year. The index surveyed 183 territories and countries. It showed some governments failed to protect citizens from corruption, abuse of public resources, bribery or secretive decision-making.
