There is the incumbent, Ma Ying-jeou, who is staking his re-election on his success in bringing Taiwan's hi-tech economy ever closer to the mainland; his main challenger Tsai Ing-wen, of the Democratic Progressive Party, who argues Ma's polices spawned growing income inequality; and James Soong Chu-yu, a former heavyweight in the Kuomintang, who analysts say could draw voters away from Ma.
