THE egalitarian nature of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system was the key to the success of The Hong Kong Transit Publishing Company, which has received a Certificate of Excellence in the Enterprise Trophy category for its production of the Recruit newspaper. Chief executive Robert Chow Chow-yung said that the newspaper's unique distribution system at MTR stations was the main reason for its success. 'In Hong Kong, the MTR is not salary or profession biased,' he said, so the recruitment advertising that Recruit specialises in reaches a wide range of people. Recruit has a circulation of 180,000 which is distributed free at 72 exit barriers in 38 MTR stations. The free publication made a net profit of $13 million on turnover of $83 million in the year to September 30.
