An ex-Shanghai government official and media heavyweight has been tipped to take a senior position at TVB, Hong Kong's top free-to-air television broadcaster.
Li Ruigang, is well known in the media industry for his tenure as president of the Shanghai Media Group (SMG), the mainland's second-largest media company by revenue.
He recently resigned as deputy secretary general of the Communist Party's Shanghai Municipal Committee - after taking the job in August - a move expected to free him to take the reins at TVB.
The Hong Kong broadcaster underwent a shareholder and management reshuffle last year.
SMG was one of the rumoured bidders for TVB in 2010, when founder and controlling shareholder Run Run Shaw was thought to be willing to sell his stake.
'Li is a good reformer,' said one Shanghai official, who asked not to be named because the discussions about Li's next move are private. 'And this is exactly what TVB needs now.'
