Demo bomb a viable option

KWAN King Wong makes a convincing case to justify the US use of the A-bombs on Japan in 1945 (South China Morning Post, December 9). Convincing, but wrong.

It seems to be generally accepted that the Japanese would have fought on after an invasion of their country, and that more people might have died than were victims of the bomb.

However, Americans had the clear choice of dropping one bomb as a demonstration, perhaps near to the Japanese coast, where it would have caused a violent and very convincing tidal wave.

Japanese military activities were at a low ebb and, even if more bombs had to be made for further demonstrations, this would have surely been practicable.

No moral, mature and wise human being would have decided in cold blood, or hot blood, to order the murder of hundreds of thousands of absolutely innocent Japanese civilians, when a clear alternative existed.

It is one more example that centralised government always corrupts human nature.
