Despite the growing popularity of media tablets led by Apple's iPad, personal computer shipments on the mainland this year are forecast to reach a record 81.9 million units.

Market research firm Gartner said that figure will be up 11.3 per cent over 2011 and will represent more than 22 per cent of total worldwide personal computer shipments this year.

The upbeat prediction buttresses the optimistic view of the market held by mainland computer giant Lenovo, the world's second-largest supplier of personal computers.

'The growth momentum in the China PC market will continue,' chairman and chief executive Yang Yuanqing said.

Yang attributed that resilience to 'China's healthy economic growth and the relatively low PC penetration rates in emerging cities'.
