TAIWAN'S Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park has had a record growth this year in production, investment capital and R & D spending.
Statistics provided by the park administration indicate the production value of the six biggest industries operating there will top NT$160 billion (about HK$47.97 billion), up from $130 billion last year.
These are computers and peripherals; telecommunications; integrated circuits (IC); opto-electronics; automation; and bio-engineering.
Their R & D spending is expected to reach $8 billion, up from $6.3 billion last year, of which the IC industry accounted for $3.5 billion.
The R & D spending by the six industries accounted for about five per cent of their total production value from 1988 through last year.
By contrast, the R & D spending of Taiwan's entire manufacturing sector was 1.3 per cent in 1990, rising to 1.7 per cent last year.
