THAT grand ol' crooner Engelbert Humperdinck is renowned for his uncanny ability to leave lady fans aghast during concerts. Well, Keeping Posted discovered his secret on Sunday night, and no, it's not oysters, Chinese tiger penis or sheer good looks. It's simply called a 'no show'. The 58-year-old musical heartbreaker did his stand-up routine (albeit in the past tense) at a special function for the Taiwan Ladies' Association of Hong Kong that certainly left the gals breathless. Engelbert was due to give a special performance at the association's annual Christmas Charity Ball in the Grand Hyatt Hotel but pulled an 11th-hour cancellation because of a 'severe throat infection'. Showing it's not always the soft ballads and charismatic charm that leave the ladies in tears, Engelbert in true entertainer form still managed to get the audience stomping in the aisles, although not to a beat. The non-profit social group renowned around town for their bulldozing charity drives, invited a platoon of social, business and entertainment celebrities to the function in the hope of raising money for various social welfare charities. Unfortunately their hopes for a night to remember were further heightened over the weekend when news came through that Humperdinck's sell-out show at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium went down a storm on Saturday night. Alas poor Engelbert's throat problems kept him elsewhere but the function, leaving the ladies looking to other, more reliable avenues, to raise money for the needy.
