Malian soldiers looted the presidential palace, then announced they had toppled Toure's 'incompetent' regime - a month before he was to step down - because of its handling of an insurrection by ethnic Tuareg rebels. The African Union suspended Mali, Europe froze aid and the United States threatened to follow suit amid a chorus of condemnation of the coup. Toure (pictured) managed to flee and is said to be in a safe location.

The League of Social Democrats chairman was sentenced to two months' jail for disrupting a public forum in September on a proposal to scrap Legco by-elections. He will retain his Legco seat after a motion for an impeachment bid was voted down by the house committee. Another impeachment motion could still surface at a general meeting. Leung and four others jailed for three weeks were released on bail pending an appeal.

The analyst's commentary for Chinese-language daily Sing Pao was supposed to reject both leading candidates for today's chief executive poll. Instead, he says, his words were twisted so that he appeared to back Leung Chun-ying - and 'an invisible hand' is influencing local media to self-censor to please Beijing. Sing Pao editor Ngai Kai-kwong denied it was under pressure from Beijing.
