Another (Anime)
A secondary school hides a dark mysterious secret, and a transfer student is at its epicentre, as bizarre, horrific accidental deaths start to befall his classmates and friends in the new anime Another.
Kouichi Sakakibara, 15, is sent to stay with his grandparents in Yomiyama after his father moves to India for work. In this small rural town, there is a legend of a cursed class. Unbeknownst to Kouichi, he is the central character in a supernatural horror story that dates back 26 years.
Slowly, Kouichi unravels the curse's history and his ties to it; but how deep must he delve, and how many people will die, before he can stop the curse?
Another is based on a Japanese mystery-horror novel by Yukito Ayatsuji, who previously worked on little known manga, Tsukidate no Satsujin, with artist Noriko Sasaki. Noizi Ito is the character designer for the manga/anime adaptations; her previous work included Shakugan no Shana and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The anime series is produced by PA Works, which also animated the shows Angel Beats! and Hanasaku Iroha.
The series is also being made into a live-action movie directed by Takeshi Furusawa. It will star Kento Yamazaki, Ai Hashimoto and Yoshihiko Hakamada, and is slated to be released on August 4 in Japan.
This is a slow-moving, but suspenseful anime, and viewers will benefit from watching the 12-episode series in one go. Keep an eye out for the DVD later this year - although it might just show up on television when you least expect it.
