Think hard before blaming others
Recently, the conflict between Hongkongers and mainlanders got more serious. Many Hongkongers call the mainlanders uncivilised, but have they thought about themselves before blaming others?
A few days ago, I saw a local boy get on the bus with some cup noodles, but no one tried to stop him. Compare this to the  video of a mainland mother giving her son some noodles, which caused a massive argument on the train, and you can see there is prejudice.
 We should practise what we preach. No matter whether or not you accept your Chinese identity, you should act as a civilised citizen.

Help people who are not as able as you
We have all noticed disabled people on public transport and in the streets, but very few of us bother to help those in need. We should change our attitude towards the disabled, not alienate them because they are physically different. 
We should consider ourselves lucky if we were born able-bodied. Just imagine how difficult life would be if you had trouble doing your day-to-day activities.  
The disabled are part of our community and it is our responsibility to take care of them and offer a helping hand. 
A small step can make a big difference.

Gadgets and travel are not a happy mix
I see a lot of people using hi-tech gadgets on the MTR.  Although gadgets such as smartphones, iPads and mini-game consoles are convenient, they also cause problems. One of these is that they can easily harm a person's eyesight. Everyone knows that keeping your eyes glued to a small screen for a long time is not good. 
However, the most serious problem posed by these gadgets is that people don't bother to communicate with others face-to-face. Often people will send a message rather than talk with their friends or family. 
People now have less motivation to go out to see others as they can chat online. 
I am not saying that we should not use smartphones or other hi-tech gadgets - just that we should not rely on them too much. 
Find the right time to use them, so they benefit - not hamper - your life.

More needs to be done for N-nothings 
There are nearly 12,000 residents who slip through the city's safety net of welfare and relief measures.
 They will get a one-off housing subsidy in a HK$60 million giveaway from the Community Care Fund. But I think long-term regular welfare would be better for those 'N-nothings'.
It is ridiculous that in a flourishing city like Hong Kong the problem of poverty and housing still exists. These people need more government support. Many of them are unskilled workers who earn very little. 
Apart from the subsidies given by the government, citizens and community care centres can also help. People can donate money to charities which help the needy, while community care centres can provide essential items to those who missed out on budget sweeteners. This may help them save some money to pay their rent.
If this problem is not solved now, the vicious cycle of poverty and housing problems will pass onto the next generation and cause more setbacks.

Money doesn't make us happy
I am writing in response to the story 'Can wealthy people ever be happy?' (Young Post, March 13). Some people believe that the key to happiness is riches. I disagree.
Many wealthy people are not satisfied with their lives, and earning more money is the only thing on their mind. 
Thanks in part to technology, we have become more selfish. We seek to have the latest gadgets and want more convenience.
This may separate us from reality and make us dissatisfied with what we have. 
You rarely see people smile at each other any more. This is because many of them are unhappy. It is indeed a sad state of affairs.
