Shen ready to hit the heights
FORMER China national head coach Shen Jinkang has extended his spell with the Hong Kong national team for two more years and has already planned two highland training camps for the local squad to prepare for the Asian and World Championships next year.
Shen will lead the national squad to Kunming, China, on Christmas Eve for their one-month highland training camp to prepare for next April's Asian Championships.
The aim of the camp is to boost the physical fitness of the territory's top cyclists.
'Generally speaking, Hong Kong cyclists are lacking in strength,' said Shen who has been with the Chinese national side for nine years. 'Even the top boy Wong Kam-po needs more physical training if he wants to reach international level.' Shen said if the Kunming tour was satisfactory, the squad would fly to Colorado for another training camp before August's World Championships in Colombia.
The territory's Olympic medal hopes rest with the two championships as the champions of individual events in the Asian Championships and the top 34 in the World Championships will be eligible for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
