The BMW Champions Mile, one of the city's biggest annual horse races, will be held on May 6 at the Sha Tin racecourse. The selection announcement for the Group One race, at the Happy Valley racecourse on Wednesday, was attended by race ambassador Kevin Cheng Ka-wing. The 14 selected runners - including King's Rose from Australia, Cityscape from Britain, African Story from the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong's Lucky Nine and Ambitious Dragon - will be competing for prize money totalling HK$12 million. Instead of coming out on a mount, the TVB actor made his entrance driving a mechanical horse - a BMW 640iA Cabriolet. The Cantonese translation of BMW is Bo Ma - literally 'Precious Horse'. Cheng said he first laid hands on a horse when he was shooting a television drama. 'Horses are very intelligent. They will fool around with you if they feel that you're an amateur rider. But when you've learned how to control them, their speed and explosive strength can be surprising,' he said. Cheng jokily asked if BMW would be prepared to give him an M5 as a gift. Perhaps anticipating his request, the carmaker's representatives handed him a model car and a giant M5 car key - so that will have to do for now.
