The fitness industry in Hong Kong is still far from being saturated, even though the total no of fitness club has already reached from a single to three digits over the last decade.

California Fitness is the 1st fitness chain in Asia revolutionising the regional fitness scene with over 19 years of business history.  It started with its first club in Central in 1996 and has currently 8 locations in Hong Kong, 4 in Singapore and 3 in China.  Under the corporate umbrella of California Fitness, the company has also two premium sub-brands named mYoga and LEAP, targeting at specific high-end customers and offering designed fitness programmes for the discerning members. “Our plan is to grow in Asia, extending from the existing markets across the region to strengthen the ideal fitness experience for urbanites.  We believe that there are still lots of room for growth and development in Hong Kong and throughout Asia. ” says Rocky Chow, Chief Operating Officer of California Fitness.

California Fitness has always aimed to provide a diversified variety of services and fitness programmes for its members. “Hong Kong is a city with lots of energy where people are constantly on the move. Therefore, it is important for service providers to understand the needs of their clients. Our in-house fitness experts thoroughly understand our members’ needs, in which they  design pointed fitness programmes to help members achieve their fitness goals and be rejuvenated to take on their daily challenges, while living their modern lives to the fullest,” says Chow.

The company is constantly looking for new comers to join the team. “With our expansion plan, we are looking for a minimum of 30 new recruits for the remainder of this year to join our personal training department. We require our applicants to have a passion for the industry who  are willing to invest time to develop their career in Fitness; people-oriented individuals with an outgoing personality, and keen to help members to reach their fitness goals” continued Rocky.

No worries for those who are determined to make a career but new to the industry.  While learning on the job, the company’s In-house Training Department and affiliated education partners will provide all the know-how and help the applicants successfully certified as professional trainers; this process will normally take about 6-9 months depending on the individuals.  “To start with, the company offers a 10K monthly salary. Once they become a certified trainer and ready to conduct  one-on-one or small groups training programs, the monthly income can be substantial. We also provide mentorship for the strong individuals who can further take on leadership roles and eventually become part of the management team,” Rocky adds.

Some tips for those who wish to apply for the trainer position; you should look at the fitness industry as a potential long-term career goal. A proactive and sincere work attitude would go a long way as this is a proactive service industry.  Lastly, university graduates are preferred but not mandatory; while fluency in English, Cantonese and Putonghua would make the candidate stands out from the crowd, given Hong Kong is a multicultural and versatile city, where people from all nationalities are gathered.
