I first came to China more than 15 years ago. At that time, China was just starting to come to terms with the HIV epidemic, and scale up its response. Not long after that, the first methadone clinics were opened.

Nowhere does the global tobacco epidemic loom more ominously than in China, where there are more than 300 million smokers. Nearly 30 per cent of Chinese adults smoke, including 53 per cent of all men.
