Contributing writer for Style by SCMP, specialising in film, TV, pop culture
Chris Newbould is a UK-based journalist who has been sharing his thoughts on film, TV and popular culture with the world, for publications across three continents, for around 25 years. Credits include the UK’s Guardian, where he covered popular culture across the North of England for five years around the turn of the century, Rappler in the Philippines, and MSN and Comic Book Resources in North America.
During a 10-year spell in the Middle East, he served as editor of regional film and TV production industry must-read Digital Production Middle East, where he was part of the team that picked up a Gold Tabbie Award for best front cover in 2012. He also spent around seven years as lead film and TV correspondent for UAE daily The National, a role which saw him stalking Star Wars through the Abu Dhabi desert, going into unfathomable detail on camera technology with Michael Bay on the set of Netflix’s 6 Underground, and becoming far too acquainted with the Fast and the Furious team.
He is currently back on home turf in Manchester, where he regularly covers the North’s TV and film production, media and digital sectors for online news platform Prolific North as well as freelancing, mostly around Hollywood, European and Asian cinema, for publications globally.
