Susan Sim was a journalist in Jakarta on 9/11. A former intelligence analyst, she joined the Singapore Foreign Service in 2001 and was posted to Washington DC as deputy chief of mission from 2003 to 2006. She is currently vice-president for Asia with The Soufan Group, a global strategic consultancy, and Adjunct Senior Fellow with the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore.

Two decades on, the actions of the Bali bombings mastermind continue to reverberate – not least in the Jemaah Islamiah-linked schools that are the ‘Ivy League’ of Indonesia’s jihadi universe.

The Indonesian accused of masterminding the 2002 Bali bombings has been held in Guantanamo Bay for the past 15 years. He remains one of a handful of high-value detainees at the US military prison still considered a high-risk threat to the US.
