American ski ace Mikaela Shiffrin and Norwegian boyfriend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde could be the golden couple of the Beijing Winter Olympics . Both are among the medal favourites at the end of remarkable years. When skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin claimed victory in the season-opening World Cup in Soelden in October, her first celebration was a finish area kiss from boyfriend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. It remains the only win the dream pair of the alpine skiing scene could celebrate together because of the calendar usually sending them off to different mountains on a weekly basis, leaving them to offer support from afar. At the Olympics, however, they could again be celebrating beside each other with both favourites for gold in Beijing. The pair have known each other for around seven years and both are regulars on World Cup podiums. Technical specialist Shiffrin has dominated the slalom while speed-focused Kilde’s strengths are downhill and super-G. “Somehow there has always been something more there,” Kilde said in summer after the duo became a couple the previous winter. Romance blossomed at a difficult time for both as Kilde was working back from a cruciate ligament tear while Shiffrin was processing the death of her father. “Alex was one of the first people that Mika had fun talking with again,” Shiffrin’s mother Eileen said in a documentary. Evidence of their fun together is seen through Instagram pictures of the pair cuddling, singing and dancing together. “We were our own sparring partners,” Kilde told the Swiss portal blick.ch. Shiffrin also supported him through his injury, he said, adding: “if something bad happens, something good often comes out of it.” Kilde has taken his private happiness onto the piste with six season victories, two more than Shiffrin this term. “We make each other stronger,” the 29-year-old Kilde said. Beijing will be Kilde’s third attempt at an Olympic medal with a previous best placing of 13th at the Games. Ambitions are now high. The same applies to Shiffrin, who has 73 overall world cup victories to go with a handful of Olympic and world gold already. “I dream about starting in every discipline in China,” Shiffrin said. That would give her five chances of another Olympic title – and a second victory kiss in the finish area.
